Since starting my loc journey, I’ve been combing the web for every loc-related topic that comes to mind. While looking up ways to moisturize locs, I came across a few moisturizing sprays and one of them caught my eye because it promoted containing black sea salt. Salt? That’s not an ingredient you normally see in moisturizing sprays. Interest. Peaked.
I instantly started researching why salt would ever be listed in a loc spray. I didn’t find a drop of information alluding to salt having any moisturizing properties, and didn’t expect to find any but what I did find was a bit more interesting.
DRAWBACKS OF USING SEA SALT ON LOCS
Sea salt isn’t recommended for frequent or long term use. Sea salt can cause breakage and weaken locs by robbing hair of its moisture. There’s a reason why slugs fear salt. Sea salt should also not be used on mature locs.
Benefits of sea salt on locs
Salt can potentially accelerate the locking process by tightening hair to help locs mature faster and reduce frizz.
I’ll try (almost) anything once if it sounds worth while so I took the plunge, purchasing the Locsanity Rosewater Peppermint Moisturizing and Tightening Spray Mist containing Black Hawaiian Sea Salt.
When I first considered purchasing this spray, I felt guilty, like I would be cheating the process or taking a short cut. I know, I know . . . I’m overthinking. The sea salt isn’t going to make my hair loc instantly lol.
I am fully committed to being patient and letting my hair loc naturally so I doubt I will be using this spray often, but I do have a section of my hair that has little to no curl pattern (right at the very front-center of my head) that I know will take ages to completely loc in comparison to the rest of my head so it’ll be fun to see what it does to my hair.
Wish me luck!
