Dry Hair TLC: The LOC Method

LOC Method for maximum moisture

When my hair was relaxed I reserved “L.O.C. method” (liquid, oil, cream) for moments when my hair felt super dry because I didn’t like how weighed down my hair felt over time. I’ve discovered that – thankfully! – those issues haven’t carried over to my natural hair. Last night my hair was edging into the “crunchy, might feel like hay” zone and took the opportunity to give my hair some extra moisturize + sealing TLC.

Liquid: Water

The first step of the LOC method is to moisturize with a liquid. In the past I used Komaza Care Califia Moisturizing Spray. This time I used plain ol’ water from my filtered shower head. Water is the base of all moisturizers after all. With spray bottle in hand, I misted my hair in sections (6).

Note: for a product to be “moisturizing,” it must contain water. If you spot an ingredients lists of only oils and butters, that product will not provide your hair with moisture.

Oil: Jojoba oil

Sealing-ExperimentThe second step is too applya light layer of oil. If you remember the sealing experiment I did a couple years ago, applying oil after moisturizing creates a barrier, trapping moisture in the hair shaft.

After misting my hair, I applied a few drops of jojoba to my palms and then smoothed the oil through my hair, focusing on my ends.

Jojoba oil isn’t my normal oil of choice for sealing, my longtime boo, grapeseed oil, still holds that position but jojoba feels much lighter. If you have fine strands, you may want to choose lighter oils like coconut and jojoba for the sealing step. Other great oils include grapeseed, avocado, olive, or sunflower oil.

Remember, just a few drops per section (around 4 or 6) will get the job done.

Cream: Kurlee Belle Kurl Defining Creme

I planned to pull my hair up into a puff so I grabbed a moisturizer that both defines and moisturizes my hair – Kurlee Belle Kurl Defining Creme.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Stearic Acid, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glycerin, Montmorillonite, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuacu) Butter, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Oil, Emulsifying Wax, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylates Crosspolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, BHT, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance (Parfum).
