A Twist Out Tragedy

Ok, so my post title is a bit… much… but keep reading (or scroll down really quick, as long as you promise to start back at the beginning *insert motherly scolding face*) and it’ll make sense.

I’ve learned the hard way that after wearing my in a puff, I must, must, must soften up my hair really well if I have any hopes of walking out of my bathroom without a palm full of tangled hair. I started off by misting my hair with water + glycerin (60%/40%) to loosen my strands and then started finger combing to remove shed hair.

Hair fully misted, I applied Organix Vitamin E Conditioner (paying specially attention to my ends — the oldest and driest parts of my hair) and twisted my hair into chunky twists, finger combing section by section.

Once I’d thoroughly finger combed through and removed shed hair, I covered my hair with a plastic cap and my Hot Head conditioning cap. I pre-pooed for 30 minutes and then shampooed with Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo, rinsed my hair clean, then deep conditioned with Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque for an hour.

I had completely forgotten I even had this conditioner. I think I’ve used it maybe once or twice before, but every time I use it I can’t get over how overpowering its fragrance is.

After rinsing the conditioner from my hair, I wrapped my hair in a t-shirt for 15 minutes before applying my leave-ins: Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk + Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

With my hair all twisted, I hopped in bed and let it air dry overnight.

Before twisting each section, I detangled with my seamless Hercules Sagemann 5580 comb

The next morning I unwound the twists and I was happy. ?

I was elated. ?

And I may have shimmied. ??

But after I ever so patiently separated the sections… I cried silent and invisible tears. ? Where did my lovely twist out go? Why did it abandon me?

I ended up just pulling my hair up ?

Le. sigh.

img_4981P.S. Hi Maryann, here’s the amount of hair I shed after finger coming before pre-pooing, and detangling while twisting. This is what I normally lose on wash days.

P.S.S. My hair hasn’t been retaining moisture the way it normally does so I know to things need to happen a.s.a.p: (1) change the filter in my Culligan Filtered Showerhead that I purchased on Amazon — because it’s been 6 months since I last changed it and the hard water I have in my home is undoubtedly causing mineral build up. And (2) shampoo with my long-time fave chelating shampoo Redken Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo to remove mineral (and product) build up.
