Wash Days: Where Has My Hair Been?

Remember when I actually used to do my hair? Since I’ve big-chopped I’ve been wearing my hair in marley twists 95% of the time, only giving myself 3-4 days of wearing my hair out in a twist-out after removing the twists before washing, deep conditioning, and tucking my hair away for another 1 to 2 weeks. Marley twists have been a great protective styling tool and they’ve helped me cope with having my hair the shortest it’s been since 2010… but they’ve made me incredibly lazy! Something’s gotta be the scapegoat for my lack of wash day posts so I nominate marley twists as the culprit.

For the last month I’ve kept it pretty simple:

{1} Pre-poo with some moisturizing mix of conditioner + glycerin to loosen any tangles and give my hair extra TCL since I don’t moisturize while my hair is in twists. My pre-poo conditioner of choice has been Shea Moisture Intensive Hydration Conditioner.
{2} Shampoo my hair Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo. My scalp has been annoyingly itchy the last couple of weeks and this shampoo has been heaven-sent. The only downside is that used straight from the bottle, it leaves my hair feeling much too stripped. Solution? I dilute it with water and a bit of glycerin to boost its moisturizing properties. To make it easier to cleanse my scalp, I use my Roots Only applicator bottle.

{3} Coffee rinse. Coffee helps reduce shedding. For more on the benefits of coffee rinses, check out this post.
{4} Deep condition with either HairVeda Sitrinillah or SheScentIt Curl Moist.
{5} Apply leave-in conditioner (Kurlee Belle Thirsty Kurls) + serum (Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum) and re-do my marley twists.

Even though I slipped into the habit of doing nothing to my hair while in twists, my hair hasn’t revolted from it. Coffee rinses and making sure my really moisturized going into the twists has helped keep disaster at bay.

As much as I love marley twists, I’ve reached that point where I need a break from them. Game plan for the time being? To start doing twist outs and puffs (baby steps), since I accidentally discovered that my hair can do a big puff this week (whoo hoo!!). I had been wearing my hair in the twist out that taking out my marley twists produces, but after getting caught in the rain without an umbrella, my hair starting shrinking and fluffing up.

When I got home I spotted an old headband and my first puff was born!

For the first time in I can’t even remember how long, I’ve been moisturizing my hair. Three cheers for getting my haircare act together and getting back into the swing of things! To keep my hair moisturized while wearing it out I’ve been moisturizing nightly with HairVeda Whipped Creme, adding a little Kurlee Belle Kurl Defining Creme on top (smells heavenly), and a few drops of Organix Coconut Milk Serum on my ends to combat any breakage. For my edges I use aloe vera gel and tie my hair down with a silk scarf.
