30 Days of Water | Benefits of Drinking Water

This month’s challenge focuses on increasing/maintaining daily water intake. I used to hate drinking water until I started adding it to my monthly goals. Now my water bottles and I are inseparable.  I normally drink 64 oz of water day but my goal this month is to work my way up to a gallon each day.

If you aren’t drinking enough water, here are a couple reasons to increase your water intake:

[*]”Drinking water helps maintain the balance of body fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.” Source: WebMD

[*]”Water helps your kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine. When you’re getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions. If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones.” Source: WebMD

I had kidney stones in September and let me tell you, YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT PASSING A STONE FEELS LIKE! I have a high tolerance for pain but I found myself begging for pain killers in the emergency room. The doctors advised that low water intake wasn’t the cause of my stones since I drink like a fish out of water, but it helped reduce the number of stones and will help decrease the frequency (because according to doctors, I’m predisposed to kidney stones).

[*] “Skin is an organ, and just like any other part of the body. your skin is made up of cells. And skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, the organs will certainly not function properly or at their best. If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling.” Source: UofW Hospitals

Take for example this woman who reported that drinking 3 liters of water a day took 10 years off her face


When I increased my water intake, my skin and acne definitely improved.
