Wash Day

[1] TLC for my ends: After 4 days of skipping my nightly moisturizing and sealing routine, my ends were feeling particularly dry. I applied Jason’s Vitamin E oil to my hair, did 4 big twists in my hair to loosen the curls from my flexi rod set, and tucked my hair away under a plastic cap and my Hot Head Conditioning Cap for the night. I didn’t heat my Hot Head but its thick elastic band prevents any oil (or conditioner) from leaking out of the cap during the night.

[2] Detangled: The next morning I detangled my hair using my homemade marshmallow root detangler, which I combined with a bit of jojoba oil instead of coconut oil this time. Working in small chunks, I sprayed my hair with the detangled and finger combed my hair to remove shed hair trapped in the curls. I kept dampening my hair until the curls fell.

[3] Co-washed: After thoroughly detangling my hair, I co-washed with As I Am Coconut Cleansing Conditioner in my usual 6 sections.

[4] Protein treatment: After rinsing the last of As I Am from my hair, I did a protein treatment using
Silk Dream Mocha Silk Infusion. I left on my hair for for 20 minutes and my hair felt nice after rinsing it out. Strengthened, yet still soft and detangled.

[5] Deep conditioned: After wrapping my hair with a cotton towel for 15 minutes to soak up all excess water, I applied Kurlee Belle Banana Nut & Avocado Deep Treatment to my hair in sections. This conditioner provides lots of slip and the way it defines my new growth never fails to trigger my hand-in-hair syndrome… and apparently my mom’s as well. She’s in town visiting me and while watching me apply conditioner to my hair reached, she over and started playing with my new growth and said “it looks and curls just like mine” with a smile. Yup, instant heart melt. I wanted to squeeze my mama bear lol.

[6] ACV: After rinsing out the deep conditioner, I sprayed my hair and scalp with apple cider vinegar + water. I leave the AVC in, I do not rinse it out.

[7] T-shirt dried: for 30 minutes.

[8] Leave-ins + detangled + dried my hair with cold air using the tension method to stretch my new growth out. For leave-ins I used Kurlee Belle Thirsty Kurls Leave-In Conditioner + Organix Awapuhi Ginger Dry Styling Oil. Once my hair was dry, I applied Eco Styler Gel to my edges and tied my hair down with a silk scarf.

I will forever sing the praises of stretching my hair using the tension method. At 43 weeks post relaxer being able to style my hair half up/half down like this with ease is cause for massive celebration, complete with confetti and twirls.

Wash-Day-42414But the half up/half down look lasted all of 2 minutes before I rolled my ends under and pinned them to my nape with 3 bobby pins for a faux bob, my all time favorite protective style. Oh, and before tucking my ends under I moisturized and sealed the last 4-5 inches of my ends.
