Your hair is?… Natural

When and why did you start your hair journey?
After my freshman year of high school my hair was so damaged that i had to cut it to neck length. I spent the remainder of high school trying to grow it back but it never could. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college that I seriously considered eliminating relaxers. However, I would always end up relaxing after about 10 weeks, very unsuccessful at “stretching” in any sense. Finally, during the summer (2011) I decide to just go natural already! I “big chopped” all of my hair off.

What is your current regimen?
My regimen is pretty simple. I shampoo and/or apple cider vinegar rinse 2-3 times every two months and make sure to do a pre-poo, hot oil, or deep conditioning treatment before hand. Working in sections I finger detangle in the shower with loads of conditioner and rinse out before applying a leave in and oil mixture. Once I’ve done every section I rinse out most of the product and then twist my hair with some type of holding product and olive or castor oil. I mostly rock twists outs and twists.

Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them?
My current hair goal is mid back length (hopefully by winter 2014)! My previous goal was simply to “grow my hair back” but I’ve managed to do that and some. I wanted to be APL by January 2014 and made it a few months shy (November 2013).

How did you achieve them? How are you working to achieve them?
I attribute my length gains to a no heat regimen (I’ve only straightened my hair twice) and to good old fashion TLC. I have recently begun to take hair vitamins in order to speed up the process of reaching my goals and trim my ends WHENEVER I need to (I keep scissors near by at all times!)

How has your hair journey impacted other parts of your life?
I wish I knew that I had low porosity, fine hair! Also, I wish I understood that there is no miracle product to keep your hair moisturized and feeling good; that it is more so about the METHODS you use.

Have you had any setbacks? How did you bounce back?
The closest thing I had to a set back was my first post-relaxer professional trim. I went to a natural salon and she dry combed ALL of my hair out before trimming what I thought was a LOT. After that day I bought my own shears!

What are your favorite protective styles?
I never really considered my self a big protective styler until someone pointed out that my twists could be considered such! I love twists for the winter time (I leave in for 1-3 weeks before redoing) because they keep my hair moisturized and keeps the majority of my strands tucked away from the harsh winter elements.

What are some of your favorite products?
I love Kinky Curly Knot Today and OYIN Handmade’s Whipped Pudding and Burnt Sugar Pomade. I’ve also always kept Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie in my Holy Grail of products.

What do you love most about your hair?
The health of my hair, my tiny spring coils and the fact that I never worry about “sweating it out”.

How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
I’m mostly motivated by the online community. It is amazing to have so much access to women who are constantly meeting their goals!

What advice would you give someone just starting out on their journey?
The strangest has been strangers flipping and fluffing my hair and telling me how much they like it.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things (e.g. conditioner, bobby pins) would you wish you had?
SO MUCH CONDITIONER. Definitely fresh water and an endless supply of coconut oil, avocado oil, and head bands.
