Hello Cold Temps, Hello Scalp Issues

Do you remember back in the summer of 2011 when my scalp decided to go crazy and wage war against me? It was awful. My scalp itched nonstop and I had never ending dandruff. Not small flakes. No, these were huge patches that seemingly covered my entire head. I tried different anti-dandruff shampoos (Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo and Biolage Anti Dandruff Shampoo) that did absolutely nothing for me. Within 3 days my dandruff would be back. The shampoos were extremely drying on the rest of my hair so there was way I was going to shampoo every 3 days.

What turned the tides of war in my favor was this mix: 1 oz of coconut oil, 8 drops of lavender oil, 8 drops of eucalyptus oil, 8 drops of tea tree oil, 20 drops of vitamin E oil. I used this to pre-poo and for my scalp massages during the week and over time I won. Jen: 1, 000, scalp: 0.

The cold weather in addition to the dry air in my home (which really is my fault since my thermostat is set at 80 degrees because I hate feeling chilly when I’m home) means my scalp hasn’t been too happy with me these last couple of weeks. Normally I have zero dandruff so when I parted my hair hair two weeks ago and found flakes, I was not happy. I refuse to go through the itching agony that went on for months two years ago so I pulled out my oils last week and reintroduced scalp massages back into my weekly happenings.

So far so good. My scalp isn’t as dry and itchy and since my last wash, I haven’t noticed a return of the flakes. I’m only doing these scalp massages twice a week but that seems to be just enough.

Does your scalp get itchy during the winter? What’s your go-to scalp remedy?
