For carrier oils I have: coconut, safflower, grapeseed, hemp seed, castor, jojoba, and sweet almond oil. For essential oils I have: tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender oil, and clary sage oil. I also have vitamin E oil. Here’s a list of mixes I’ve done or plan to do, along with a few benefits of each oil. Essential oils should never be applied to scalp or hair undiluted. Always, always dilute them in a carrier oil. I learned this the hard way when I applied tea tree oil, directly to my hair. It only took a few minutes for to go from tingling to burning

Coconut and vitamin E oil

  • Coconut oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties, making it great for scalp health
  • Vitamin E is helps to improve circulation. Increased circulation in the scalp is beneficial for hair health and growth. Vitamin E can make hair lustrous and bouncy, as well as prevent breakage.

Safflower, grapeseed, hemp seed oil

  • Safflower oil protects, nourishes and firms the hair (I can attest to firmer hair after use). When used for scalp massages, it can dilate the blood vessels, results in more nutrients supply to the hair follicles through blood circulation. Safflower oil has high percentage of linoleic which is beneficial to the hair, and can boost the the natural production of ceramides.
  • Grapeseed oil contains vitamin E and linoleic acid which helps strengthen hair. Grapeseed oil also has high levels of linoleic acid – link to post on grapeseed oil

Coconut and a few drops of tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender and vitamin E

This is my go to recipe to apply to my scalp for my hot oil treatments. In 2011 I had a huge flare of seborrheic dermatitis and this mix really control the itchiness and dandruff flakes.

Castor oil and grapeseed or jojoba oil

(can even add a few drops of essential oils like lavender)
Castor oil helps thicken hair, smooth the hair cuticle. It’s a thick oil, mixing with grapeseed or jojoba oil helps thin it out.

Other blends:

  • Jojoba and few drops of lavender oil or peppermint oil
  • Sweet almond oil and tea tree or eucalyptus oil
  • Castor oil and coconut oil.

There are many other mixes out there. It’s great to play around and mix and match.
