When did you start your hair journey? What inspired you?
I started my hair journey in March 2013. I first relaxed my hair in 2008 when I started University. Back then I hadn’t the first clue of how to take care of neither natural nor relaxed hair. In the first year after I got a relaxer I was in love with my hair. It was a little below shoulder length, thick and had volume. In hind sight I realize that my hair even in that state was nowhere near its full potential. By the time I entered my second year of University my hair was broken off, short and unhealthy. I knew from then that I wanted to take proper care of my hair and get it to a healthy state, but I didn’t have the knowledge or financial resources to do so. So I decided to put it off until after I completed University.
I graduated from University with hair somewhere between my chin and my shoulders. I couldn’t wait to start working so I could start taking care of my hair. In the months leading up to the actual graduation ceremony I became interested in make up and started watching makeup videos on Youtube. I stumbled upon videos made by black girls like me who were growing their relaxed and natural hair to lengths that I never imagined were possible. This was the last bit of motivation I needed and my hair journey was born.
Describe your hair for us.
My hair is between armpit and bra-strap length. It was below bra-strap length at the beginning of this year, but I had to cut it at the end of January after I experienced a setback. It is fully texlaxed, thick, low porosity and a little on the protein sensitive side. My natural texture (from what I can remember) is 4a/4b.
What is your current hair regimen?
I moisturize and seal with a water-based moisturizer and either olive or coconut oil everyday or every other day, depending on how my hair looks and feels. Once a week I wash with a sulphate-free shampoo, and deep condition with a moisturising deep conditioner. After I deep condition I apply a leave-in conditioner (I alternate between protein and moisture based), followed by a little coconut oil and air dry. I usually blowdry and flat iron or do a rollerset for the first few weeks after I when I relax my hair.
At the end of each month I do a strong protein deep condition using ORS Hair Mayonnaise. I also do a strong protein condition a week before I relax my hair to prep for my relaxer. I relax my hair every twelve to fourteen weeks and I usually trim at the same time.
Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them?
My overall hair goal is to achieve full, healthy, waist length hair. I have not achieved this goal as yet. My short term goal is to get my hair to a fully healthy state and hopefully be mid-back length by the end of this year.
How did you achieve your goals? How are you working to achieve them?
I am working hard to achieve my goals by keeping my regimen as simple as possible and sticking to it. When your regimen is too complicated it becomes time consuming and I get frustrated. So moving forward the plan is just to do what needs to be done to keep my hair healthy.
Have you had any setbacks? How did you bounce back?
Yes. I recently suffered a setback that caused me to cut about six inches off my hair. That set me back about a year on my hair journey. The ends of my hair became damaged from neglect. I neglected my hair for the entire 2015, and the damage was plain to see. I was so busy with work and taking care of my daughter (born September 2014) that most of the time I just half-assed my hair care. I have come to the conclusion that I am not going to neglect myself just because I have a job and a family. To make sure my hair regains its former health I have simplified my hair routine so that I can have a balance between my hair journey and everything else I have going on.
How has your hair journey impacted other areas of your life?
My hair journey has impacted my life in many different ways. For one, it has reinforced the fact that hard work brings true joy. Having healthy long hair has also had a positive effect on my self-confidence. One less thing to be insecure about. n a more serious it has created avenue (my blog) through which I can express myself, help others and enjoy it at the same time.
What are your favourite protective styles?
My favourite protective styles are buns and twisted updos.
What are some of your favourite products?
Some of my favourite products are: Elasta Qp Olive Oil and Mango Butter Moisturiser, Crème of Nature Moisturising Shampoo (green bottle), Keracare Humecto Conditioner, Scurl No-Drip Moisturiser, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
Fortunately I have not had to deal with many person who doubt me. I think this is mainly because I avoid talking too much to persons who are not into “hair journeys”. Maybe that is not the best approached but I prefer to just steer clear of the negative.
Firstly I would say be patient and take pictures to keep track of your progress. It is the only way to really see the small improvements in your hair.

I love the thickness of my hair. I don’t need to do anything extra for volume.
