Curl Former Sets Make Me Swoon

This week’s #washdayexperience theme is “soft and sleek curls” so I decided to bring my curlformer dupes out of retirement for my second curlformer set since snipping off my relaxed hair last year. Here’s what I did.

Process

[1] Misted my hair with water + glycerin and did a hot oil treatment with castor oil and almond oil for an hour.
[2] Co-washed with Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Cleansing CoWash.
[3] Conditioned with Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner for 30 minutes while I waited for my bentonite clay + apple cider vinegar mask to work its mask-y mojo.
[4] Rinsed my hair and 2 strand twisted each of the four quadrants I basically do everything in to keep my hair stretched.
[5] Applied leave-ins: Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-In Conditioner [my review is posted here], my long-time fave serum Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, and for a little hold I used Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Styling Foam.

I applied my leave-ins row by row, i.e. apply leave-ins 1,2,3… set that row… repeat for next row. I also kept my spray bottle of water on hand to re-wet my hair if it got too dry. I get the smoothest curl former sets on wet hair. Having wet hair also makes it MUCH easier to gently hook the section ¬†of hair through the curl former.

I used 98 curl former dupes in total. Curl formers twist clockwise and counter-clockwise. I used 50 pink and yellow curl formers on the left (counter-clockwise) and 48 orange and blue (clockwise) on the right, and let my hair dry overnight.

Results

Trying to sleep last night was basically one long running prayer of Lord, PLEASE just knock me out. Sleeping in these things is far from ideal. According to my Fitbit I woke up 5 times and was restless 12 times (when I’d toss about and grumble from shifting out of one of the few comfy positions I’d manage to wiggled myself into) during my 6 hours of shut-eye. True to Jen form, as soon as I took out the curl formers and saw the fruits of my sleepy labor all was right with the world. And by “right with the world” I mean I may or may not have gotten giddy and started bouncing on my toes just to see the curls bounce around my face.

Hellllooo soft, smooth, bouncy heat-free curls *hits the electric slide two times* ? How you doing *Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. voice*

How rude is my cat that her hair snuck into my curls

After taking out the curl formers I shook my head about… maybe a little longer than necessary… and headed out for my daily dose of caffeine.

Next time I hope I remember to leave an inch gap between the lip of the curl former and my scalp. That little gap makes sleeping in curlformers soooooo much easier because it allows the curlformers to move around freely without putting tension on my precious scalp.

  1. Hey, I recently did a Bentonite Clay mask with mix. I’m a bit mixed about the order of application on wash day and results I see that in this wash day you also did a Bentonite Clay & ACV mask and followed the same order (DC then BC Mask). What are your thoughts on it? I don’t think you’ve addressed it on the blog. If you have I missed it, so let me know.
    Thanks.

  2. Tell us more about your ACV-bentonite clay mask?

  3. LOVE these results!!! looks so silky, and shiny, and bouncy, and HEALTHY!
I’ve always wanted to try curlformers (dupes), but now I have a TWA, so I’ll live through you, until such time as my length would comply.

  4. Your curls are every shade of dope! Look at that shine. I’m definitely getting these curlformers.

  5. do you apply the leave in and oil to each small section as you put in the curlformers?

I apply to each row, then put in the curl formers for that row.

  6. Your curls look excellent! Even though the process was rough, the results are well worth it. How long do you plan to keep them? Does the styling foam work well for hold?

Thank you! I plan to keep them for a week. I’ll report back on the hold after a few days have gone by.

  7. YYYYYYYAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
These curls are definitely worth it!
But I can’t lie, sleeping in curlformers is the worse and I only used half of what you use! What’s the difference between the blue/yellow curlformers and the pink/oranges ones?

The length, the blue and yellow are longer. I can’t remember the lengths off the top of my head but you have reminded me that I’ve got a post on my curl former dupes collecting dust in my drafts folder. I feel like I’m hoarding posts.

    2. You both (Krys & Jenn) make me SICKKKKKKKKKK! Both of you kept tempting me to try and try and try and try curlformers, and I finally gave them away AGAIN (the first set I returned to Sally’s)! I just can’t get it! Love your results…but you both still make me sick and I shall not fall into the trap of trying again. Nope. Not gone do it, I’ll just admire from afar! lol
