This week’s #washdayexperience theme is “soft and sleek curls” so I decided to bring my curlformer dupes out of retirement for my second curlformer set since snipping off my relaxed hair last year. Here’s what I did.
Misted my hair with water + glycerin and did a hot oil treatment with castor oil and almond oil for an hour.
Co-washed with Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Cleansing CoWash.
Conditioned with Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner for 30 minutes while I waited for my bentonite clay + apple cider vinegar mask to work its mask-y mojo.
Rinsed my hair and 2 strand twisted each of the four quadrants I basically do everything in to keep my hair stretched.
Applied leave-ins: Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-In Conditioner [my review is posted here], my long-time fave serum Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, and for a little hold I used Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Styling Foam.
I applied my leave-ins row by row, i.e. apply leave-ins 1,2,3… set that row… repeat for next row. I also kept my spray bottle of water on hand to re-wet my hair if it got too dry. I get the smoothest curl former sets on wet hair. Having wet hair also makes it MUCH easier to gently hook the section of hair through the curl former.
I used 98 curl former dupes in total. Curl formers twist clockwise and counter-clockwise. I used 50 pink and yellow curl formers on the left (counter-clockwise) and 48 orange and blue (clockwise) on the right, and let my hair dry overnight.
Trying to sleep last night was basically one long running prayer of Lord, PLEASE just knock me out. Sleeping in these things is far from ideal. According to my Fitbit I woke up 5 times and was restless 12 times (when I’d toss about and grumble from shifting out of one of the few comfy positions I’d manage to wiggled myself into) during my 6 hours of shut-eye. True to Jen form, as soon as I took out the curl formers and saw the fruits of my sleepy labor all was right with the world. And by “right with the world” I mean I may or may not have gotten giddy and started bouncing on my toes just to see the curls bounce around my face.
Hellllooo soft, smooth, bouncy heat-free curls *hits the electric slide two times* ? How you doing *Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. voice*
After taking out the curl formers I shook my head about… maybe a little longer than necessary… and headed out for my daily dose of caffeine.
Next time I hope I remember to leave an inch gap between the lip of the curl former and my scalp. That little gap makes sleeping in curlformers soooooo much easier because it allows the curlformers to move around freely without putting tension on my precious scalp.
