Are Smaller Braids Better For Braid Outs?

I was so ready to remove my marley twists this weekend. I normally keep them in for a week, 2 weeks max, but last week was a constant countdown. I love the styling ease they provide, and the fluffy twist outs I get after I take them down but after about 2 days my scalp just seems to get so dry. Maybe it’s because the large parts expose my hair and the dry winter air is causing the dry scalp? I don’t know.

After wearing my post-marley-twist twist out for 2 days, I started off my wash day by doing a hot oil treatment with coconut oil. Check out these cheat-sheets on hot oil treatments and some worthwhile oils. (Click the graphic to enlarge and scroll through)

Once I’d successfully created an oil slick on my head, I tucked my head into my Hot Head Conditioning cap and left the oil work its magic for an hour. Next, I rinsed out the oil and co-washed with Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Cleansing Conditioner then deep conditioned for an hour with SheScentIt Banana Brulee Moisturizing Deep Conditioner.

For leave-ins I used Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In + Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. After detangling each section with my seamless Hercules Sagemann 5580 comb and the braided my hair.

I did 20 braids in totals and let them dry overnight.  In the morning I took out the braids, separated the sections to my heart’s content, fluffed, and went on my merry way.

Because I had more braids this time around (my last braid out is posted here), my braids were smaller and the end resulting texture was tighter. I think I prefer the tighter texture. I dunno. I’m fickle ?

How often do you do hot oil treatments? What’s your favorite oil?

  1. Loving the texture, I think the smaller braids worked out really nicely. I use coconut oil like always, and grapeseed oil when I remember that I have some 🙂

  2. Smaller braids give a more defined look…and may extend the life of your braid out too. I prefer looser braid outs cuz it’s less work 🙂

Ohh and I found that the SM Curl Enhancing Smoothie helps with definition too. How do you like it?

  3. Lovely braid out. I do not do hot oil treatments very often but whenever I do one I think a combination of castor oil and coconut oil would be nice.

Thanks! Nope I didn’t but I’ve been applying hemp oil to my ends during the week.
