Wash Day | Flexi Rod Curls

I’d been putting off washing my hair because wearing my hair in a puff was just so easy. Y’all know I’m all for no muss, no fuss styles. Late last night I got my act together and pulled out my flexi rods for this week’s Wash Day Experience theme: heat free curls. Here’s my recap!

[1] Pre-pooed by spraying my hair with water and applying Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner to my hair. I don’t think I’ve done a true protein treatment since I big chopped. I’ve been cheating by using this conditioner whenever my hair starts to tip over into moisture overload. To help the conditioner penetrate into my hair, I popped my Hot Head heating cap in the microwave for one minute & 30 seconds and then onto my big head for 20 minutes.

[2] After pre-pooing, I shampooed with Redken Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo (my review is posted here). It’s been a while since I used a clarifying shampoo to remove product build up and mineral build up so grabbing my fave clarifying/chelating shampoo for this wash was a must.

[3] Next I quickly deep conditioned with Shea Moisture 10-in-1Renewal System Hair Masque while in the shower.

[4] Once I’d hopped out the shower I applied my leave-ins (Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow, & Restore Leave-In Conditioner with a few drops of Organix Vitamin E Penetrating Oil on top) and set my hair on flexi rods.

After desperately flopping around in bed, trying to find a comfy position for what felt like forever, the heavens opened and God smiled down because I ended up falling asleep… only to wake up a million times during the night when I’d roll out of my comfy position and the rods would either poke me or tug on my hair. Sleeping with curl formers is so much easier. At least with curl formers I can part my hair in the back and use the CFs as a pillow if I sleep on my back. But these flexi torture sticks? They almost guarantee I’m going to wake up tired and grumpy.

And what did I have to show for a restless night? Still wet hair in the morning. It’s like my hair and the flexi torture sticks conspired against me, whispering in the night like

“Hey hair, wanna know really get her in the morning?”
“How, Sticks?”
“Listen, just don’t try completely… I promise you she’ll yell ‘oh c’mon!’ and stomp her feet in the morning.”
“Really? Ok, ok, I gotta see that.”

? My hair didn’t fully dry so I had damp frizz going on at my roots.

And one section that just gave up completely.

But damp frizziness aside, I still like the results… I have no burning desire to do another flexi rods set any time soon… but still like it.

If you participated in this week’s theme, how did you achieve your heat free curls?

  1. I sleep in the yellow ones and they're not too bad. But I've never slept in curlformers so maybe I've just accepted the torture as normal, lol. But your curls came out really pretty despite not being completely dry.

Accepting the torture, I totally understand how that feels! And thank you!

  2. So smooth, If it were mine I wouldn't be able to keep myself from touching it every five minutes.
I use much fewer rods and roll them into almost circles against my scalp. The results won't be anywhere near as smooth as this though. I guess it's sleep or curls to die for.

Sleep or curls to die for lol! I'm so over the grumpy mornings, I'm picking sleep next time.

  3. Very smooth results! The only way i sleep in flexi-rods and get a good nights rest is if its rolled upwards as opposed into a spiral motion how you have it. Only difference is your curls will be alot shorter.

Rolling upwards is a great tip, thank you!

  4. Your curls are beautiful! They still came out really well! I wish I could tell you the secret to sleeping in flexi-rods, but I can't. I absolutely hate it lol.

You have me curious about the SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex 10-in-1 Hair Masque. Did it provide any slip for you?

Thank you! I like it, it's really thick, provides slip, and replenishes moisture to my hair in 5-10 minutes (that usually how long I leave it in while in the shower).

Thank you! I think setting my hair while still wet really helped smooth out the texture.

  5. how was Shea moisture 10-n-1. i saw it in the store and wanted to get it but hasn't really heard about that one

I like it. I've been using it for a couple weeks now. It sinks into my hair, it's thick (helps from wasting it in the shower which I appreciate, detangles it well, and provides lasting moisture.
