Have you ever been stuck in a rut where you don’t even want to do the things you enjoy? That was me since the last time I posted back in September. As much I love hair care, blogging, and interacting with you all I found myself logging into Blogger and instantly having to close it out because I just couldn’t type a word. Since I last posted, I’ve been doing the bare minimum: shampoo or co-wash cleanser, conditioning, putting my hair in marley twists, remove, twist-out for a couple days. Repeat. I finally ditched my marley twists last week and straightened my hair. Here’s my recap.
Pre-poo: I mixed Organix Vitamin E Conditioner (one of the gems I’ve been using that has saved my hair from setbacks → check back this afternoon for that post) and Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner together and applied it to my hair for about 30 minutes. The Organix Vitamin E Conditioner for moisture and the Coconut Milk Conditioner as my cheat for a protein treatment.
Shampooed with Bobeam ACV & Clay Shampoo Bar. Since ending my transition in April, I have yet to find a shampoo that my natural hair likes other than this shampoo bar. It gently cleanses without stripping, doesn’t dry out or tangle my hair.
Applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment. If you’re a long time reader you’ll remember that my relaxed hair loved PM’s SSDT. Somewhere along the lines, I stopped using it in order to cut out a step and shorten my time in the shower. I forgot I even had a bottle so when I found it before hopping in the shower I decided to use it; I needed all the detangling, smoothing help I could get before flat ironing my hair.
Coffee rinsed. For more on coffee rinses, check out this post: Coffee Rinses for Shedding
Here’s my hair after hopping out of the shower (still full of coffee – I do not rinse it out). I wasn’t expecting PM’s SSDT to clump my curls together, but I loved it.
It’s been 28 months since my last relaxer back on June 28, 2013. Time flies!
Using a towel, I squeezed the excess water from my hair and applied Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal System Hair Masque. I left it in for 15 minutes while sitting under my hair steamer. The conditioner sunk into my hair, detangled easily, and left my hair so moisturized.
After rinsing out the deep conditioner, I twisted my hair into 4 sections while in the shower. Then pinned them around my head to stretch my hair before wrapping my hair with a t-shirt for 30 minutes. Working in sections, I applied Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Ginger Mirrorsmooth High Gloss Primer (heat protectant) to my hair and then blow dried (cool setting) using my handle-less dryer. Once dry, I flat ironed with Paul Mitchell Express Ion Smooth+ flat iron, 400 degrees.
Third time’s the charm I guess. This is the third time I’ve flat ironed my hair since big chopping in April and I’ve finally achieved flat iron results that I really like: smooth hair, not weighed down by product. Skipping use of an additional leave-in (normally I use It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-In) worked in my favor. My hair felt so moisturized after deep conditioning that I didn’t need one.
As for how long my hair is now, not much has changed since early September: still grazing bra-strap length… hoping I can claim BSL by the end of the year. To care for my hair during the week I’ve been applying a few drops of Organix Vitamin E Penetrating Oil and crossing wrapping my hair every night. It’s now day 5 and I haven’t even bothered to moisturize, I haven’t needed to… three cheers for effective conditioners!
