Your hair is? Natural
When did you start your hair journey? What inspired you?
I started my journey around 8 months ago when my hair was in a terrible state because I was passing the flat iron every day. I went on YouTube and saw so many YouTubers with beautiful long hair and decided I had to try to bring my hair back to a healthy state.
Describe your hair for us.
My hair is a combination of 3B/3C. It’s medium density. Right now, I’m rocking the TWA!
What is your current regimen?
I find my curls are most popping when I keep a good protein-elasticity-moisture balance. For protein, I use the Aphogee Keratin 2 Miinute Reconstructor or the Ouidad 12 Minute Deep Treatment 2 or 3 times a month. For moisture, I deep condition with heat every single week! I have tried so many deep conditioners but I always find myself going back to the Shea Moisture Purification Mask or the Aussie 3 Min Miracle Moist. Finally, for elasticity, I use the Curlific Texture Treatment from Aphogee every week or 2 weeks.
It might seem like a lot, but I find this routine works best for my hair and it keeps my hair healthy and super defined. Finally, because I do my wash-and-go everyday, I’ll shampoo my hair every week with a sulfate-free shampoo in order to avoid product residue.
While it’s dripping wet, I will apply first my leave-in conditioner. Right now, I am using the Aunt Jackie’s Quench moisture intensive leave-in conditioner or the Paul Mitchell The Conditioner. They both provide good slip and instantly define my curls.
Second, I will use the Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream. It has great ingredients and it smells great.
Finally, I’ll apply the Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling gel or the Eco Styler olive oil gel.
This combination of products doesn’t flake and works great together. Usually, I’ll wait 20-30 minutes for the products to set in my hair and then I’ll diffuse for 10 minutes or just air dry. Then, I’ll apply a little bit of coconut or almond oil to remove the gel cast.
Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them?
Yes! I want to have bra-strap curly hair in the future. I big chopped a few weeks ago, so I am still far from my goal, but that doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy the journey!
How did you achieve them? How are you working to achieve them?
I’m working on having healthy hair and body. To do so, I take vitamins everyday (biotin and Nutricarp), I drink tons of water, eat a wholesome diet and train 5 to 6 times a week (crossfit and long distance running)
I also make sure to sleep on a satin pillow case and I do the L.C.O method everynight.
Have you had any setbacks? How did you bounce back?
Not yet! That doesn’t mean I won’t ever have set backs. In case it happens, I will re-evaluate my regimen and make some little changes.
How has your hair journey impacted other parts of your life?
Yes. I use to be shy around strangers, but since I’ve cut my hair really short, I have been a lot more bold and confident. I also feel more connected to my African heritage.
What are your favorite protective styles?
Box braids are life! haha for real, they are a great protective style.
What are some of your favorite products?
My favorite lines at the moment are Shea Moisture (especially their purification mask), Aunt Jackie’s and Creme of Nature. They all have great ingredient lists and work well with my hair.
How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
When I was transitionning, so many people thought I was crazy because all they saw was the perfectly flat-ironed relaxed hair. But they didn’t realized how much breakage I was experiencing. They thought it was useless to go on a hair journey. Following girls that had healthy hair on Instagram and YouTube motivated me to keep going and not give up. Ever since I’ve chopped my hair though, everyone loves it and I am so happy about it!
What advice would you give someone just starting out on their journey?
My advice to anyone is don’t mind the haters, or people that doubt you. I found this quote that really sums my attitude: “Sometimes the people around you won’t understand your journey. They don’t need to, it’s not for them”. This is YOUR journey! You can do whatever you want with your hair. It’s YOUR crown. It makes YOU unique.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things (e.g. conditioner, bobby pins) would you wish you had?
- Shea moisture Purification mask
- Conditioner, conditioner, and even more haha!
- Satin pillow case
- Ecostyler gel
What do you love most about your hair?
I love how unique it is! It’s a mix between my Canadian and my Guinean heritage. Also, it’s super versatile. I’m always switching it up. My hair goes well with my personnality: it’s colourful and unique!
