Your hair is? Relaxed
When did you start your hair journey? What inspired you?
I started my hair journey back in 2011 when I first started watching YouTube beauty and hair guru’s YouloveMegs and Traycee from KISS.
Describe your hair for us.
My hair is currently texlaxed below bra strap length however I am thinking about transitioning to natural after realizing like many new naturals I would really love to get to know my natural texture. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it and think it would be great seeing the differences between the two in terms of style maintenance etc.
What is your current regimen?
I wear a lot of protective styles which include braids, buns, wigs while I’ve been transitioning. I love the versatility in wearing wigs and being able to take it out the next day and enjoying my natural hair.
Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them?
Before I started my hair journey I wanted to achieve mid back length and when that happened my current hair goal is to not give up in transitioning and relax my hair out of frustration.
How did you achieve them? How are you working to achieve them?
I first achieved my goal of mid-back length by sticking to my hair regimen of washing with a clarifying shampoo about 1x a month or when needed. Moisturizing and sealing every other day when my hair would be dry. Deep conditioning as needed and doing tea rinses to prevent shedding. Of course there were times where I switched things up and didn’t follow my regimen to a T but overall this is what I did. For my new hair goal I’m working to achieve staying natural for the time being by just wearing protective styles, moisturizing, and deep conditioning often.
Have you had any setbacks? How did you bounce back?
Oh boy yes I have. I think setbacks are my middle name haha. When I was pregnant dealing with my natural texture was a breeze then after I had the baby it has become so different and I ended up texlaxing my hair again. But it has now been about 5 months since I last had my relaxer and I’m just trying to love this new texture and remind myself my natural hair and my relaxed hair are two different textures and I need to learn to love both of them.
How has your hair journey impacted other parts of your life?I have often gotten the responses like “oh is that your real hair..” “Can I touch it..” When I was in high school an old friend of mine even pulled on it to see if it was real…? Which didn’t bother me but it is strange why some people think we can’t grow our hair long.. We can it just takes time and effort to maintain since our texture requires more maintenance.
What are your favorite protective styles?
My favorite protective styles are buns, braided hairstyles, and wigs.
What are some of your favorite products?
My favorite products are coconut oil, ORS Moisturizing Lotion, Kinky Curly Knot Today, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
I really don’t pay much attention to those who doubt me. I always try to surround myself with like minded and positive people who encourage and uplift me.
What advice would you give someone just starting out on their journey?
I would say stay positive, welcome the setbacks, and know there’s so much resources out there that can help you.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things (e.g. conditioner, bobby pins) would you wish you had?
Without a doubt I would want water haha, coconut oil, my satin scarf, conditioner, and clarifying shampoo.
What do you love most about your hair?
I love my texture and how thick it is.
