Hair Story Feature: Meet Laria

When did you start your hair journey?
October 28, 2011 I shaved my head completely bald.

Describe your hair for us.
My hair would be considered 4c, extremely dense with fine and medium strands

What is your current regimen?
Wash twice a week with sulfate free shampoo or cleansing conditioner, deep condition every wash day alternating between protein deep conditioner and moisturizing dc. I pre-poo prior to washing and do scalp massages with a natural oil daily. I clarify my hair and scalp once per month with bentonite clay or Moroccan red clay and do the search and destroy method when my hair needs a trim.

Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them?
Right now I’m aiming for mid back length. Ultimately I’m aiming for waist length. I’m currently at arm pit length so I haven’t quite reached my hair goals yet but I’m getting there!

How are you working to achieve them?
I’m focusing on retaining length.

Have you had any setbacks? How did you bounce back?
I used to cut my hair all the time due to single strand knots. I used to never deep condition my hair! I minimized this by applying natural oils to my scalp and hair daily and deep conditioning every single wash day. I’ve also recently added oil rinsing to my regimen.

How has your hair journey impacted other parts of your life?
I’m definitely more confident about who I am. It’s also made me way more organized in general

What are your favorite protective styles?
Two strand twists, two strand twists in a bun and individual braids.

What are some of your favorite products?
Alba Botanicals Sulfate-free Shampoo with Coconut Milk, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask and my homemade coconut milk leave-in spray.

How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
I don’t really have anyone in my life that openly doubts me but I keep style icons with my hair type as my background image to keep me motivated.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things (e.g. conditioner, bobby pins) would you wish you had?
Deep conditioner, water, Moroccan red clay powder, coconut oil

What do you love most about your hair?
The density and versatility

What advice would you give someone just starting out on their journey?
Take pictures or you’ll never really see how much progress you’re making and without a visual you’re less likely to stay motivated. Focus on length retention and maintaining a healthy scalp, also realize that hair growth takes time.
