Hair Story Feature: Meet Aisha

Describe your hair for us.
I have medium/thick [relaxed] hair which is currently at full shoulder length. I’d say my hair is quite low porosity.

When did you start your hair journey? What inspired you?
Well, I was introduced to the world of black hair care by a friend in 2007. I was very impatient and really quite sceptical which led me to give up shortly after. A few years later I revisited it and started doing a lot of research. I would say my hair journey started 2011 although I was quite inconsistent in the beginning. I was very inspired by all the ladies that I had come across that had grown their hair to lengths I never thought were possible for black hair.

What is your current regimen?
• Wash day 1x a week
• Deep condition 2x a week
• Co wash 1x a week
• Moisturise and seal 2x a day (morning and night)
• Clarify every 4-6 weeks
• Protein conditioner every 2 weeks
• Oil scalp every other day
• I relax my hair every 16 weeks

Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them?
My first hair goal was full shoulder length which I have achieved. My next goal is full arm-pit length. For now my ultimate goal is full bra strap, although this might change once I get there who knows!

I achieved my first goal from being consistent with my regimen, exercising, drinking lots of water (I have always done this to be fair) and just listening to my hair. I am currently trying a cornrow regimen (without extensions) to try and see if I can retain even more length and reach my goal quicker.

Have you had any setbacks? How did you bounce back?
For ages I kept going back to the salon to get my hair relaxed and every time I left I would feel like crying as they would rip through my hair with with small rat tail comb, they were so impatient with my hair when it would knot, they would rip through the knots with a comb and slowly the effects of all the abuse showed in my hair being very uneven, the ends were not in the best shape. I no longer go to the salon to get my hair relaxed, my mum does it for me. Oh I had the uneven ends cut and started a fresh back in March 2014.

How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
At first my family used to tease me about growing my hair because they didn’t think it was possible. It made me even more determined to succeed. Now they ask me for help and advice, which just goes to show that you should stick to what you believe in no matter what anybody tells you! What motivates me to keep going is the thought of having long thick hair that I can swoosh around haha!

What advice would you give someone just starting out on their journey?
Do it! The longer you wait to start the more progress you could have been achieving. Make sure to do lots of RESEARCH, be consistent and most of all be patient as you won’t see results overnight.

How has your hair journey impacted other parts of your life?
It helps me to stay as consistent as I can with going to the gym as I know exercising is beneficial for hair growth.

What are your favorite protective styles?
I like cornrows (with my own hair), I like to clip my hair up with my ends tucked in and I love head wraps (with scarves) as a protective style.

What are some of your favorite products?
Some of my favourite products include: S Curl, olive oil, grapeseed oil, Motions Moisture Plus Conditioner and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner!

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things (e.g. conditioner, bobby pins) would you wish you had?
Conditioner, satin bonnet, butterfly clip, Olive Oil and freezer bags to baggy my ends with.

What do you love most about your hair? I love how it just keeps getting thicker!

  1. This is helpful, thanks. I have low porosity hair myself so like hearing about the regimens of women with similar hair.
