Hair Story Feature: Meet MaRae

Your hair is? Natural

When and why did you start your hair journey?
Once my mom went natural and I saw the way she rocked her natural hair that was when I decided. I started my natural hair journey in October of 2011 and that is when I had my last relaxer. I wore blowouts for a few months but that only lasted so long. After that I wore weaves and sengalese twists up until October of 2012 which was when I got the little bit of relaxed hair cut off.

What is your current regimen?
Every Saturday is wash/co-wash day so before I wash/co-wash my hair I do a pre-poo with coconut and olive oil. I let that sit for about 30-45 minutes then I proceed with washing or co-washing my hair. Once I am done I put coconut oil in my hair while it is still wet which keeps my hair very moisturized. I use one of the many cream based products and a gel substance product to either do single chunky twist or flat twists. For the rest of the week I twist my hair everyday or every other day but it really just depends on how much definition my hair has from the first twist out.

What do you wish you knew at the start of your journey?
There isn’t anything that I wish I knew at the start of my journey because I had to figure out what worked for my hair.

What are your favorite protective styles?
My favorite protective styles are weaves, sengalese twist, or different pin-up styles with twist.

What are some of your favorite products?
Some of my favorite products are Coconut oil, Shea Moisture, Hawaiian Silky, Cantu Shea Butter and Organix just to name a few.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love that my hair is very versatile and that it’ all mine!

How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
People are always going to have something to say about you whether you are doing good or bad so I keep it moving because I know the plan that God has for my life and no one can take away what He has for me. Knowing that God is the only one who hold my future is what keeps me motivated along with the love and support of my parents, family, and friends.

What is the funniest or strangest hair related experience you’ve ever had?
I would have to say when strangers come up to me and ask “Is that all of your hair?” or “Can I touch it?”. It always makes me laugh or look!

  1. Thanks for the natural hair feature MaRae, nice hair . jen i had a quick questions, do you have any hair brush recommendations? I previously had locs and undid them but even though I now have decent length natural hair, my edges are uneven and there are lots of flyways. I enjoy wearing up styles however so i really want to find a brush that is gentle enough on my edges to help me get a more polished look, help.

I use a plain old Conair soft bristle brush. What really helps smooth out my edges (and keep them smooth during the day) is I dampen the brush before using it to gently brush in the gel and then I tie my edges down with a silk scarf to let it dry.

  2. And the smile. That's the way to live. You've made my day.
