2013 Hits & Misses

Hits

Flexi rods. I used flexi rods for the first time this year and while sleeping in them is akin to cruel and unusual punishment, the results have been worth it.

Successfully stretched my relaxer for 6 months! Whoop whoop! This stretch is the longest stretch since the start of my healthy hair journey and frankly I wasn’t sure if I would make it this far but here I am. I still haven’t made up mind regarding when or if I’ll be relaxing my hair so for now, the journey continues.

HairVeda Sitrinillah Deep Conditioner. This is the most moisturizing deep conditioner I’ve tried in a while. I deep conditioned my hair 7 days ago and even though I didn’t moisturize and seal during that time (*gasp!*) my hair remained moisturized.

Pura Body Naturals Murumuru Moisture Milk. This moisturizer (which can also be used as a leave-in conditioner) has become my staple, most-used moisturizer. It provides lasting moisture without weighing my hair down too much, even with daily use. My review is posted here.

Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum. This is an oldy but a goody. I’ve used this serum since 2011 and I still love how well it works against breakage. This has helped me tons with preventing further breakage at my nape (which was the goal of my 6 month nape challenge).

Komaza Care Matani Leave-In Conditioner. This is the second protein leave-in conditioner I’ve tried (the other being CHI Keratin Leave-In Conditioner in the gold and silver bottle) but I think it’s my fave out of the two. It’s a light leave-in that strengthens my hair without weighing it down, all while providing enough slip to detangle. CHI Keratin Leave-In Conditioner doesn’t provide much slip.

My hair after applying aloe vera gel (but before tying down with a scarf).

Aloe vera gel and Eco Styler Gel. These two gels (mostly AVG because I use it more often) have been my edges’ saviors. My edges remained tame, smooth, yet never hard and never flaky. My stretch would be 100 times more frustrating if I didn’t have these two gels in my arsenal to help keep my frizzy edges at bay.

Keeping my new growth stretched. This has helped immensely during my relaxer stretch. Keeping my new growth stretched helps reduce tangles, which is always a cause for celebration in my book.

Deep conditioning twice a week. Increasing the number of times I DC has bumped up my moisture levels and have helped reduce breakage at the line of demarcation.

Misses
My hair with Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque

Komaza Care Protein Hair Strengthener. This protein conditioner was too hard of a protein for my hair. It caused my hair to stiffen tangle. I haven’t tossed it yet in the hopes that it might work better if I ever have to correct some serious moisture overload.

Kinky Curly Come Clean Shampoo. This shampoo was too much of a “clarifier” on my hair (even though it isn’t advertised as a clarifying shampoo). It made my hair feel stripped and my hair tangled up horribly. I’ve only used it once (during this wash day back in November) and I’m too wary to ever use it again.

Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. I’m not sure what this conditioner was supposed to do but it didn’t do much of anything for my hair. It just sat on top of my hair until I rinsed it out.

What are your hits and misses for the year?

  1. Best product I tried this year was the Nutress Hair Protein Pack for Color Treated Hair! I was nervous about dying my hair soo much but it kept me right!!

  2. wow so hairveda's conditioner has surpassed pink grapefruit?

  3. I tried the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque many moons ago and my hair hated it as well. I couldn't even bring myself to give it away; in the trash it went. Congrats on your ridiculously long stretch!

  4. JEN that is so awesome on your stretch. Was you able to hit up Sallys for there sale. I had three misses that I'm shock didn't work for me and that was Kanechon Ceramides Conditioner, Elasta QP Dpr-11 & Soy Deep Conditioner. They all just sat on my hair. I always had to follow up with my favorite hit this year which is ORS Replenishing Conditioner, man I just love this stuff. Makes my hair so soft and gives me tons of slip. Another hit is Elasta Shampoo for Relaxed hair. Cleanses my hair just enough but also makes it nice and smooth. I just tried the Roux Moisture Line in shampoo, conditioner and dc. & that's another hit for me. Oh and garlic pills. I had been taking them consistently for months and didn't know how well it was working for me until I stopped. Well I am back on them now. Really did help with my shedding.

  5. Noticed u have kinky curly knot today …. In terms of its detangling abilities how do u like it?

  6. Congrats on your 6 month stretch! I'm glad you had more hits than misses this year :). I am just now reaping the benefits of keeping my new growth stretched!

  7. Lovely Flexi Rod set and Eco Styler is absolutely a hit for me too.

  8. Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque was a MISS for me. It dried out my hair and I had to spend another hour re-deep conditioning my hair.

Flexirods are always a hit.Love them!

  9. I had one miss and it was Silk Elements Megasilk Olive Moisturizing Treatment. I won't count it out totally since it works better if I mix it with something else or put it on my ends only. As for hits: Loreal Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm, Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum, and Aloe Vera Gel. Thanks Jeni for introducing me to the last two products…I really need to try flexi rods. Have a Happy New Year!!!

  10. It's a shame about your experience of the Shea Moisture Masque, it's a product that's been on my wish list for a while. Aloe Vera Gel has been a staple of mine for a while and I tried the Eco styler gel this year and was surprised at how good this is considering the low price. I still need to try flexi rods properly, your hair in the picture above looks gorgeous (as usual) x

  11. My hits were way more than misses which was good and I did a post on it.Congrats on your 6months stretch

  12. Satin pillow rollers are the truth.
    Tresemme with keratin
Oils and conditioners in my relaxer for texlaxing

    Misses:

It's a 10 is over priced and in a tiny bottle

I'm still deciding on elasta qp leave in and chi strengthening spray

  13. My hits are protective/Low maintaince styles; aunt Jackie's leave in (that ish is a life saver); ors hairrepair invigorating shampoo (my scalp approves); jbco; and PM smoothing serum (Thanks Jen, girl that's the truth! )
Misses: roller setting (even indirect heat is not my friend, SET-BACK); PM the conditioner (bleh); Hawaiian silky 14n1(texlaxed hair liked it, natural hair not so much); and main and tail (itches!!!!!)

  14. Hi Jen! Do you have a post on how you keep your new growth stretched? I'd love to learn more because I'm experiencing crazy tangles in my new growth.

Hi there, no I don't but I don't do much. I either blow dry my hair with cold air using the tension method (pictured here) or I clip my hair in sections (pictured here).
