Reader Mail: How Do You Maintain Flat Ironed Hair?

Leeah asks:

Hi Jen, I saw you recently flat ironed your hair. How do you care for your flat ironed hair? I guess what I’m asking is what do you use to make sure your flat ironed hair doesn’t get weighed down but also doesn’t break? Do you still moisturize and seal? And this might sound silly but do you use a comb at all when rocking your flat ironed hair?

Hi Leeah, I still continue to moisturize and seal my hair after straightening it, I just use moisturizers that do not cause much build up. When my hair is flat ironed (or straightened from a roller set) my two favorite moisturizers  are #3 Silk Dreams Hair Care Mocha Silk Hair Milk (my review is posted here) and #4 Hairitage Hydration Cocoaloe Hair Hydrator (my review is posted here). I take care not to apply too much but either one of these moisturizers does the trick for me, providing moisture without much build up with use. After moisturizing, instead of using my boo-thang grapeseed oil, I opt to seal with a few drops (literally, a few drops – like 5 for my whole head) of either #2 Organix Macadamia Oil or #5 Organix Shea Butter Liquid Glass Serum.

Apart from moisturizing, I always try to provide my hair with a boost of protein as well to strengthen my hair against any breakage that might occur when my hair rubs against my clothes. To maintain the most “flow-y” hair, I lightly spray my hair with #1 CHI Keratin Mist once or twice during the week. I also like to use Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum on my ends (not shown) but it’s a slightly thick serum so I tend to save that one for when I don’t really care about my strands clumping together too much.

Your last question isn’t silly 🙂 Nope I don’t. I finger comb. I finger comb when cross wrapping my hair and I finger comb when taking my hair down.

  1. Hey Jen I wear a wrap hairstyle , what can I use for moisture , something for hair growth that doesn’t weigh my hair down

  2. Hi Jen! 2 quick questions 🙂 Why don't you use grapeseed oil on your flat ironed hair? Also, do you find you have reversion when using creamier moisturizers (such as Darcy's or PuraBody MuruMuru Milk)? Thank you and Happy December <3

Hi Violet. I don't use grapeseed oil on my flat ironed hair because with daily use, it makes my fine strands clump together more than either of the oils mentioned above.

No creamy moisturizers like Darcy's CLTC or PBN Murumuru do not make my hair revert. The only moisturizer I have that makes my hair revert is Komaza Care Califia Moisturizing Spray… but that's because it's a liquid moisturizer with a much higher water content than my creamy moisturizers.

  3. These products you recommended are great! I'd have to agree, you need to give hair enough moisture after using the flat iron. It's vital to seal in that moisture so hair does not break easily.

  4. Sooo…does the Organix Shea Butter Liquid Glass Serum do half a good as job as PMSST for smoothing your hair? Or is it more for moisture?

I use the Organix Liquid Glass to seal in my moisturizer. I've never used it the same way I use Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum (i.e. after applying leave in conditioner and then detangling) but I can't see it working as a well as PM SSS works.

  5. I stopped using Chi Keratin Mist a few years ago because it left my hair a bit stiff. But since seeing it here, I started using it once or twice a week to give my hair a protein boost and I love it! Thanks Jeni!

  6. Thanks Jen! Oh ok, I thought coconut milk could be considered a protein and since it was so high on the list, but I never really gave it a real try. I do focus mostly on moisture so I'm going to give it a try!

Ah yes, coconut milk does contain proteins, I completely forgot about that, thank you for reminding me!

  7. Hi Jen,

Why do u prefer to use mocha silk or cocoaloe vs Darcy LCTC as your moisturizer? Also what do u think about mocha silk having protein in it? It was pointed out to me that it may be too much protein to use daily as I do with Darcy's? How often would you recommend using it? I gave it to my husband whose been using it but wondering if I should be an Indian giver and take it back! Lol

      Hi Tarra,

I prefer Mocha Silk because it does have protein for my straightened hair (helps gives my hair a boost of strength from breakage) and it's light and doesn't cause my fine strands to clump together (which is my number one reason for preferring it for straight hair). I prefer Cocoaloe over Darcy because Cocoaloe makes my hair clump together less than Darcy's does with use and doesn't cause build up as quick as Darcy's CLTC.

Although Mocha Silk does contain protein, it's pretty far down on the ingredients list (#10 out of 14) and because I predominately focus on lots of moisture, using Mocha Silk Hair Milk daily is not enough to tip disrupt my protein/moisture balance.

🙁 I can't provide a definite recommendation because whether you can use it daily and benefit from it depends on how often you're using other proteins, how much moisture you provide your hair, and whether you're protein sensitive. I'd suggest trying it out on a small section of hair and see how that goes before applying to your whole head.

      Hope that helped!

  8. Hi Jen, I have a couple questions. How does the CHI Keratin Mist compare to Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer as a protein leave-in conditioner? When would you use CHI Keratin Leave-In Conditioner instead of CHI Keratin Mist? Can Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum be used at the same time as Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum? Did you mean those are your favorite moisturizers for when your hair is flat ironed?

      Hi there:
      (1) I haven't used ApHogee Keratin & Green Tea as a leave-in, only as a heat protectant with a leave-in conditioner under it so I can't compare the two solely as leave-in conditioners.

      (2) CHI Keratin Leave-In Conditioner and CHI Keratin Mist don't serve the same functions . . . well for me they don't. One is a creamy leave-in conditioner and the other a strengthening hair mist. CHI Keratin Leave-In softens while strengthening my hair so using both at the same time isn't needed. Here's my product review on it: Product Review: CHI Keratin Leave-In Conditioner

      (3) I wouldn't apply one right after the other but I have used them during the same wash day: I've used PM SSSerum right after applying leave-in conditioner to help smooth and detangle my hair and then a few drops of Organix Anti-Breakage Serum on my ends after air drying my hair.

      (4) Yup, that's what I meant, thank you for catching that. I'll go back and edit.

    2. Thank you for such a quick and thorough response!
