Hair Story Feature: Meet Brown Girls Hair

Your hair is?… Natural

When and why did you start your hair journey?
I have been natural all of my little life!

What is your current regimen?
My mom washes and conditions my hair every 6-8 weeks! Now that I’m getting older, she says she’ll have to start washing it every 4-6 weeks because my body is changing a lot! She keeps my hair in protective styles so that she only has to comb it once a week. On wash day, my mom blow dries my hair but she doesn’t flat iron or press it. She say’s maybe when I’m a little older she will flat iron it!

Do you have any hair goals? Have you achieved them? How did you achieve them? How are you working to achieve them?
Yes! I want my hair to be long like Rapunzel, but my Mom doesn’t care about my hair getting that long because she says it would be too much to handle!! She just works hard to keep it healthy.

What do you wish you knew at the start of your journey?
I think this would be a question for my Mom to answer…..As her Mom, I wish I knew at the start of my journey with her hair that heat was my friend. Don’t get me wrong, not excessive heat, but warm heat from a blow dryer really helped me be able to just comb through her hair. I learned that heat isn’t the enemy, it’s the misuse/excessive use of heat that’s the enemy.

Before blow drying her hair, it would take me several hours just to comb her hair. I started blow drying her hair when she was 4 and I only do it on warm no more than 4 times a year.

What are your favorite protective styles?
Braids, cornrows, and buns in that order! LOL

What do you love most about your hair?
I love the length, but I don’t like it to touch my ears!

How do you deal with people who doubt you? What motivates you to keep going?
I don’t have doubters have you seen my hair? LOL My Mom and all of the nice people who support my youtube channel and blog keep me going!

What is the funniest or strangest hair related experience you’ve ever had?
I have a bad habit of playing with my edges and one day I got my hair tangled in a knot and my Mom had to figure out how to get the knot out without cutting it!
