I was worried that the Aloe Vera Gel would clump and clog the pump over time but I’ve been using this gel for months and clumps or clogs have never been an issue. As for the EcoStyler Gel, we all know how I feel about jars: ♥ ’em.
Aloe vera gel doesn’t smell like anything really. The EcoStyler Gel does have a fragrance but it’s so light that I never noticed it until I had to sniff the jar for this review.
EcoStyler has a thicker consistency than the Aloe Vera Gel, which has a waterier consistency – hopefully you can tell what I mean in the picture to the right. I’ve found that Aloe Vera Gel is a little bit easier to apply to my hair; it just sinks in better.
How I Use
Before applying either gel to my hair, I dampen it. Sometimes I use plain ol’ water, sometimes I’ll spray my hair with Komaza Care Califia Moisturizing Cream. After dampening my hair, I apply one of these gels, sometimes both to my hair. Because Aloe Vera Gel has thinner consistency, sometimes I find myself applying Aloe Vera to my hair more liberally and then going back and adding just a small amount of EcoStyler to my edges. After applying the gels(s) to my hair, I wet my soft bristle brush before gently brushing to distribute the gel(s). Lastly, I grab a silk scarf and tie my edges down.
Thankfully, neither one of these gels causes flakes or build up on my hair. Maybe it’s because both my hair and brush are damp? Me Dunno.
When it comes to how well these gels react with my moisturizers, Aloe Vera Gel pulls ahead. On days I apply gel to my hair, I like to moisturize (but not seal my edges with oil where I’m applying gel) right before. When brushing in the gel, both Aloe Vera Gel and EcoStyler (ES Gel more than AVG) make my edges a bit white but by the time I remove my headscarf the next morning, my hair is normal. If I were stepping out right after moisturizing and then applying gel to my hair, the white-ish color would be an issue but because I always apply the gels before bed my hair gets plenty of time to dry.
Even though these are both gels – and keep my edges smooth and frizz free for hours – at the end of the day my hair feels just as soft as when I started out.
When it comes to surviving through work outs – and I sweat quite a bit at my edges – because EcoStyler provides a stronger, longer lasting it does a better job at keeping the frizz at bay. The picture on the right below was taken (hours after applying EcoStyler to my hair ) after I got home from 2 hour work out at the gym.
I can’t declare a winner of this little product showdown because they’re both great gels. However, because EcoStyler provides a stronger, longer lasting gel, the deeper I get into my stretch the more I rely on EcoStyler holding my edges in line during the day. On the other hand, Aloe Vera Gel is much more moisturizing than EcoStyler and leaves my hair softer.
