I posted about the Roots Only Applicator Bottle a few posts ago and thankfully Southern Girl (thank youuu!) posted a link to the bottle at Sally. I had a 15% coupon for Sally Beauty so I broke my no-buy goal for March (and I don’t feel bad!) and grabbed two bottles.
I still stick by what I originally said about the Roots Only applicator bottle – it’s not a necessity if you have a regular bottle with applicator nozzle – but it’s still a convenient gem to have.

The comb-like tips make it very easy to get right to the scalp and apply oil evenly and faster. You know me, I’ll all for anything that cuts down on manipulation so what I like is that I don’t have to part my hair a hundred ways for even application. All I do now is stick the tips in, squeeze a little while the tips down, gently, and massage the oil a bit with the pads of my fingers and move on.

If the tips were a little bigger, I think this bottle would be nice for applying shampoo to the scalp (if you dilute the shampoo a bit to make it easily dispensable), oil (clearly, right?), or applying tea rinses right to the scalp.

I was super excited when I realized that the Roots Only nozzle fit perfectly on my bottle of Hair Trigger. A couple of twists and my oil applicator got a nice upgrade… and I’m such a dork because I thought it was nice the nozzle matched the HTEGE graphic on the bottle :D.

I’m glad I had a Sally coupon which is ultimately what convinced me that it was okay to snag these bottles. My mom and granny both regularly do scalp massages with oil so once my local Sally Beauty has more bottles, I’m going to grab some for them.

Well that’s all there is to this quick review of the Roots Only bottle. If you’re willing to spend a few bucks, just don’t forget to look online for a Sally’s coupon code if you’re purchasing online… there’s always a Sally’s coupon code floating around the web.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing the "Roots Only" applicator bottle. I'm going to get a couple bottles tomorrow.

  2. dear jen, i have natural unrelaxed hair. would i be able to use this ? would I be able to part my hair and oil it with this roots only app bottle ? thanks.

  3. hmm sounds good but is it?

when u have alot of regrowth , there is simply no way this can comb through your roots without breakage

im guessing your roots would have to be pretty detangled 1st

when you used it how many weeks post were you?
did it glide through your roots with ease?

    1. with alot of new growth its more likly to apply the product on the roots rather than your scalp itse

Hi Eni, I don't actually comb it through my new growth… I avoid combing my new growth at all times except on wash days to prevent breakage. I stick the tips into my hair, and gently angle them up and down while squeezing out oil.

I can always feel the tips against my scalp when using it… unless new growth every gets denser than the length of the applicator tips, getting the oil to my scalp won't be an issue.

  4. If still use the powders or not, how often? How much growth would you attribute to the powders?

    Thanks and happy hair growing!!

  5. Hi Jeni!
I luv your blog! Its so full of detail and really helpful. This is totally OT but do you still use cassia and henna. I have discovered ayurvedic powders and I am HOOKed!!

Hi there, I no longer use cassia (never used henna)… I haven't used cassia since 2010 I think.

  6. Wow. I was just thinking the other day.. Why don't they have something like this and its like right here.

  7. O.k., this s truly fantastic. Little manipulation, better application, who could ask for anything more.

  8. Hi,
Do you have a review for the Hair Trigger? I was wondering if it really doubles/triples a person's hair growth.

    1. Thanks! I'm always skeptical when it comes to products that claim to increase hair growth.

  9. this is going to be a great tool for my tween daughter to use: she can apply oils herself w/o me having to do both hers and mine #killingtwobirdswithonestone

  10. Hey Jen, ladies, walmart also carries this applicator bottle (in the hair dye section and I believe I paid 3.99 for it.

    1. Hi All. My name is Mike and I am one of the owners of Roots Only. First, I want to thank Jeni for taking the time to do a review of Roots Only…A BIG THANK YOU!!!! Second, Roots Only is no longer available in Wal-Mart. We are now focusing our business more towards Beauty Supply Outlets such as Sally Beauty Supply. And finally, Jeni, if you would like to do a giveaway I would love to sponsor one. Please email me at mike@rootsonly.com.

Hi Mike, it was my pleasure and thank you for the giveaway offer! I know JGA readers would love that.

  11. Glad you were able to find it. Neither Walmart at the time or Sally's now seem to stock a lot of them but when I got mine the woman that helped me said they were hearing good things about the bottles. If you got to RootsOnly.com you can order it directly from them for the ladies that live outside of the US but the shipping may make it worth hunting around or seeing if someone is willing to grab one for you and ship it.

  12. This would be so handy to have, I hope I can get it in the UK!

    1. Yup I've got one just takes a while….from rootsonly.com

  13. This looks like an amazing little invention. Going to look for it here in the UK. Thanks for sharing!

  14. Bought this bottle a couple of months ago online and I used it the same way with the Hair Trigger Growth Elixir. LOVED both. I use it when I do my pre-poo and it works great. Glad you like it.

  15. I have this Jen and I do love it! I did shampoo with it already (diluted and it was so good) you should try it because the bottle is so easy to squeeze!

Oo thank you for sharing, now I definitely want to try it out for shampooing!
