I’ve wondered for a while if, on a basic level (what I mean is not factoring in the different benefits each oil has on hair) one oil seals better than another. Think of the strands of your hair as the jars. When you moisturize your hair, you’re restoring moisture to it. Sealing with an oil traps the moisture into your hair.
So on October 26, 2012 I started a little experiment. I filled 5 mason jars (and I’ll admit, I have a bit of a mason jar obsession, I use them to organize and store tons of things around my home) with 12 ounces of water each. I added oil to four of the jars: jojoba, grapeseed, almond, and coconut oil, leaving the fifth jar with only water to serve as the control. You may have seen on the JGA Facebook page that the first picture I posted of the jars was taken with the jars on the windowsill… they didn’t live there long. Blame my peeping-tom of a kitty. She likes to lay/sit/walk across my window sills to watch the outside world and I didn’t trust her not to bump the jars. I ended up moving them to my dining table.
Results (November 15, 2012)
For sealing purposes, there is no difference between the oils. All four oils effectively prevented moisture loss, while the water in the control jar without the oil evaporated a little past the half way mark (just under 6 oz).
I didn’t choose jojoba, grapeseed, almond, or coconut oil for this experiment because they’re the “best” oils to seal with, they’re just the oils I had on hand (although I’ll admit, it’s no secret, my fave is grapeseed!). If you have fine hair, you may want to choose a lighter oil, like coconut or jojoba. If you’re seeking more bang for your buck and want to reap the benefits of adding ceramides into your regimen (read about the benefits of ceramides here), you may want to choose to seal with grapeseed oil, hempseed oil, or sunflower oil.
Do not feel as though you have to limit yourself to oils right out the bottle either. Sealing with an oil-based moisturizer is a great way to seal in your water-based moisturizer too. My current fave oil-based moisturizer to seal with is Coconut Mango Hair Moisturizer by HairitageHydration but there are plenty others. Sometimes, I even seal with Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum.
If you were hesitant about sealing, I hope this post and little experiment helped!
