Anne asks:

Hi Jeni, I’ve been trying to figure out how to work protein treatments into my washes. In a few quick steps, how would I go about it?

  1. I have a question.. Which is better the protein treatment before neutralizing or the protein treatment a week before you relax or does it even really matter?

Hi Sameerah, sometimes I do both but if I had to pick one, doing a protein treatment before neutralizing is more effective because the cuticles along the hair shaft are raised and open after applying the relaxer (but before neutralizing) so the protein treatment penetrates much better into the hair shaft.

  2. I have a question, If I do regular light protein treatments and use the aphogees keratin and green tea restrutive after every wash, wouldnt it be too much if I do tea rinses before I deep condition? I'm just startin my healthy hair journey and I'm trying to set up my regimen to the last detail so it would be SUPER if you helped me with this one. Thanks!

Hi Crhystal, it all depends on how your hair will react to that line up. Try it for at least one wash and see how it goes.

  3. I had always had hair issues and my hair was always breaking, it would never grow past my neck. So I am tryign your blog post to help me grow my hair this year. My hair is cut short which is great for the new year, new beginning for my hair. I tried growing my hair natural years before but I was not successful, to much breakage, headaches and work. I love my hair relaxed but I want ways or help from you, to keep it healthy well having a relaxed hair? Thank you so much for your blog, it helps me out a lot. Keep it up, we love it!

  4. Thank you for this! How often do you suggest a protein treatment? My hair is relaxed…

Hi Anon, that really depends on how your hair reacts to protein. If your hair is protein sensitive, you would do protein treatments less frequently than someone whose hair is not protein sensitive. Listen to hair, do a strand test from time to time to gauge your protein/moisture balance and use that information to determine when your hair needs protein. Hope this helps!

  5. I love love love your blog! Thank you for all the information you provided. I have a question, should you use the same protein treatment after your Relaxers as you do on regular protein treatment washes?

    1. Author

Thank you! There's nothing wrong with using the same protein treatment 🙂

  6. I tried the protein before neutralizing method with my last relaxer, & I definitely can say I noticed my hair was stronger & shedding was less. Is there anyway I can make a hard protein treatment before my next relaxer in a few weeks?

Hi Paris, yay for the mid-relaxer protein step! I'm sorry but I'm not sure how to make ones own hard protein treatment.

  7. Hello Jen,

It is advisable to mix different protein treatments?

    1. Author

      Hi Ella,

I wouldn't advice it. Protein treatments differ in protein concentration, mixing them may up the protein content your hair needs and might through your hair into protein overload.

  8. I must agree with everyone else these beauty sets are the ish! I rarely do protein treatments since I have become natural I need to work on that. My protein treatment of choice was always Aphogee, I loved that entire line when I was relaxed.

Thank you! I eventually want to try the moisture shampoo.

  9. I love the Redken products. I tend to use them to the exception of many others. Sometimes someone will recommend an alternative but I usually find I go back. Haven't seen the protein treatment over here (Australia) but I'll keep an eye out for it…

  10. I second what Ebony said 100%! A full-size & desktop daily calendar for us hair-obssesd ladies who sit in an office & need a fix. Lol. But in all seriousness, your skills are fab.

    1. Author

Thank you! The calendar is still in the works.

    2. Author

I hadn't even thought of a desktop calendar!

  11. You are such a graphics beast, I love the display of this. I hope you are going to go through with the calendar idea, I think these photos are PERFECT.

Lol! Thanks girl. I'm still working on the calendar, just haven't a lot of time to commit to it.
