*Warning* This is a long post and pic heavy 🙂
I ended my stretch yesterday and I have to say, this recent touch up was the best thus far. I’ve been self-relaxing for nearly a year and have been getting better at it each time but I have to say, yesterday was a breeze. I started off gently detangling my hair and basing my scalp with regular petroleum jelly. Next I apply CHI Silk Infusion to my hair, root to tip. I had initially planned to use liquid silk amino acid, but forgot to purchase in time, so I used CHI SI instead. I next coated my already relaxed hair with Roux Porosity Control and then Paul Mitchell Super Charged Moisturizer. I applied the Roux PC first to close the cuticles of my already relaxed hair and decrease any potential processing due to relaxer run off. I went with the PM Super Charged Moisturizer because it’s a thick conditioner and I figure I’d get moisturizing pre-poo out of it.
The relaxer I used was the Organic Root Stimulator Relaxer, lye formula, normal strength. I used the half-and-half method (as shown in the vid I made a little while ago) but this time I made a few changes. (1) I used a brush to apply the relaxer – the brush allowed me to apply the relaxer just on my new growth and avoid overlapping the relaxer. (2) I still sectioned and twisted my hair but this time I left off the clips – this made it easier for me to handle each twist as I applied the relaxer because I didn’t have deal with the clips tangling. (3) I used the same sections when smoothing – all I had to was grab a twisted section, separate, and smooth. It took me 13 minutes, per section for both application and smooth. I only smoothed with my finger tips. I actually recorded myself applying and smoothing the relaxer. I’ll post it if anyone wants me to. Just let me know in the comments.
After I rinsed out each half, I did a protein treatment with ApHogee Intensive Two Minute Keratin Reconstructor, leaving it in for 5 minutes, rinsed and then applied ORS Neutralizing Shampoo, let it sit for about 2 minutes, and then neutralized four times. Better safe than sorry. A relaxer that is not properly neutralized will cause damage, can’t have that!
Once both halves were neutralized, I went on with my normal routine. I shampooed with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Moisturizing Lather Shampoo, applied Roux Porosity Control for 30 seconds then rinsed. Then I deep conditioned with KeraPRO Restorative Treatment for 1 hour under my Gold ‘N Hot Heat Cap. I finished up with a clear rinse using Jazzing, by Clairol. As usual, I did every in four sections.
My hair felt great afterwards, very smooth and nearly tangle free. I think the biggest contributing factor was low manipulation throughout the whole process. I kept my hair in the same four sections it was parted in when I applied the relaxer all the way through roller setting my hair. The most I had to do was undo the twists before I rinsed out the relaxer, and then part my hair when I was setting it on the rollers.
For my leave-ins, I sprayed ApHogee Keratin and Green Tea Restructurizer, applied Darcy’s Botanicals Daily Leave-In Conditioner, and then Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum – Sally Beauty carries a generic version that’s just as good: GVP Smoothing Serum. I tend to be heavy handed, but I made sure I used dime sized amounts. My reward? Very light and bouncy hair (yay!) I flat ironed my roots a little once I took down the rollers to make sure my hair would be as straight as possible for my trim the next morning. To finish up the day, I applied a dime size amount of Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil (hands down, my favorite finishing product) and then cross wrapped my hair for night.
This morning I trimmed off half an inch and shaped up the dreaded V-shape my hair grows in. I know I said I was going to cut off at least and inch, but… well… I just didn’t want to haha. My ends looked ok. So I did the necessary and left it at that. But, you be the judge. Could I stand to cut a little more? Oh, I recorded myself trimming, hope to get that up soon.
I did notice an increase in shedding during the whole process. Not sure what caused it. I take garlic supplements for shedding but truth be told, I take 1/4 of the recommended dosage, lol! The instructions are to take 1 pill four times a day… out of laziness I’ve been taking one, once a day. Time to actually follow the instructions! 🙂
Overall, I’m beyond pleased with this touch up. My hair is smooth (y’all know I’m a FAN of smooth hair), light, has swang, and just feels awesome. The only change I plan to make to my regimen moving forward is the addition of castor oil. One of my goals for the years is thicker year but I haven’t done a darn thing about that yet, so I’m going to try castor oil. I also need to figure out how I’m going to trim the front of my hair to frame my face because the ends there are thin and detract from my hair as a whole.Okay, enough of my blabbering, here are the pics!
